Outlook 2003 & Exchange - SWS & UMF - Configuring for travel/home/road

Purpose:  The RPC over HTTPS protocol allows you to use all the features
of Outlook 2003 with the exchange server from outside the UMS network
without having to setup a VPN client which can often be unreliable.

Procedure:

  1. When you first open Outlook 2003 for the first time you will receive the following dialog asking you to create a new account.  Select Add a new e-mail account and click NEXT.
  2. If you have Outlook already configured you can go to Tools ---> Email Accounts in the menu.
    1. Choose View or change existing e-mail accounts
    2. Choose your Exchange account and hit Change.
  3. In the next dialog, you will be asked what type of account you would like to create.  Choose Microsoft Exchange Server and click NEXT
  4. In the next dialog box you are required to enter the server hostname and your username.  Enter either fudd.ad.maine.edu or marvin.sws.ad.maine.edu depending on what server your account resides on.  Enter your username in the username field and click More Settings.
  5.   Click Cancel if you receive a login prompt after clicking on More Settings in the previous dialog box.
  6. Click on the Connection tab.
  7. On the Connection tab you should see at the bottom a checkbox that says Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP.  Put a check in the box to the left of it and hit the Exchange Proxy Settings button.
  8. The Exchange Proxy Settings window should now be open.
    1. In the box labeled Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange enter "Sylvester.ad.maine.edu".
    2. Put a check mark in the box beside Connect using SSL only.
    3. In the box labeled Principal name for proxy server enter "msstd:sylvester.ad.maine.edu".
    4. Put a check mark beside "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first" and also beside "On slow networks, connect using HTTP first".
    5. In the Proxy authentication settings select "NTLM Authentication".  You window should look exactly like the following:
  9. Click OK twice.  You should receive a message that prompts you to restart Outlook.  Click OK and close Outlook.
  10. Open Outlook.  Do a CTRL - Right Click on the Outlook icon in the system tray.  If all is well you should see a handful of connection that say they are using HTTPS.  If they all say TCP/IP, something is wrong with your setup.
