Using UMS Google Applications Chat with Pidgin IM Client

The University of Maine System's Google applications site (gmail.maine.edu) supports instant messaging (chat) through either the Google website or an XMPP-compatible instant messaging client, e.g., Pidgin (www.pidgin.im)

To use Google Chat with your maine.edu gmail account

  • If you are a UMS employee and haven't yet activated your maine.edu gmail account visit the migration application on mail.maine.edu.  UMS students have already been migrated to maine.edu gmail and do not need to perform this step.
    • Login to the migration application with your UMSID
    • If you only want to use Google chat and do not want all your existing mail and future new mail forwarded to gmail, then uncheck both boxes before clicking "Migrate"
    • Your maine.edu gmail account will be created when you click "Migrate"
    • Login to your new maine.edu gmail account at: gmail.maine.edu using your UMSID credentials and accept the license agreement.
  • Download and install the proper Pidgin version for your operating system from www.pidgin.im
  • Run Pidgin
    • In Pidgin, from the "Accounts" menu, select "Manage Accounts" and click "Add"
    • Google Chat Pidgin Settings
      • Basic Tab
        • Protcol = xmpp
        • Username = [Your UMSID.. which is also the left side of your email address, e.g., john.doe@maine.edu would enter john.doe]
        • Domain = maine.edu
        • Password = [your UMSID password]
      • Advanced Tab
        • Require SSL/TLS = checked
        • Connect port = 5222
        • Connect server = talk.google.com
        • File transfer proxies = proxy.jabber.org
    • Click "Add"
  • In the Pidgin "buddy list" window, on the account menu, select "Enable" and click on your gmail account.
