Which Driver to Use
We recommend that you use the PCL driver, e.g., NRWYOFFICECOLORPCL in your printer list. If you have printing problems with the PCL driver, try the PS (postscript, e.g, NRWYOFFICECOLORPS) driver.
Setting Printer Preferences
- Start | Printers and Faxes
- Select the printer object (e.g. NRWYOFFICECOLORPCL)
- Select "Set printer properties" under Printer Tasks
- Force Black & White printing to save color toner:
- Click Printing Preferences on the General Tab
- Change Color Printing Mode from True Color (24 bpp) to Monochrome
- To switch back to Color printing:
- Change Color Printing Mode from Monochrome to True Color (24 bpp)
- Printing in Grayscale (useful for printing color documents that will be photocopied or faxed)
- Select Print in Grayscale on the Color tab
- Printing on Both Sides (duplexing)
- NOTE: These settings "stick" so the printer properties will remain the way you leave them

Ordering Supplies
- Centers are responsible for supplying any consummables (print cartridges, transfer and fuser kits) for their color printers
- Always use genuine HP consumables, e.g., toner and labels. Any brand laser printer quality PAPER can be used.
- If HP consumables are not available, make sure the ones you buy are HP certified for use in the 5550 printer. For example, transparencies and labels. Keep in mind, running just ONE uncertified transparency or label sheet could cause thousands of dollars worth of damage.
- Substantial savings can be obtained by using your University OfficeMax account
- e.g. the black toner cartridge (HP C9730A) list price is $226, compared with OfficeMax's $188 UMS price
