Understanding Accounts and Passwords
It can be a daunting task to keep track of your userids and passwords
for the various systems that you are required to access in order to do
your job. This explanation should make it a little easier to keep track of your various userids.
When you become a UMS employee, you are given access to various computer systems and resources based upon the requirements of your job. Your UMS Account gives you access to Project Enterprise (Peoplesoft) and other systems/services. A typical University College/ITS employee also has access to the following:
University College and ITS Augusta staff are assigned a Novell NDS Account. This account's userid is the same as your UMS id and provides the following:
If you have been given VM/CMS access, you will be prompted every 150 days to change that password. Your password must be at least six characters and must contain one number.
We also require that you change your NDS password every 150 days for security purposes. You will receive a notification upon logging into your computer that your password is set to expire after six more logins. You will be asked if you wish to change your password at that time. The prudent user will make that password change before it actually expires, thus saving an embarrassing phone call to Tech Support. If you wish to change the password when prompted by Novell:
If you elect to change your password prior to being notified that it is set to expire, such as when you have changed your UMS password and wish to keep it the same as your NDS password, follow these steps:
Your NDS and GroupWise accounts are set up so that you do not have to retype your password to access your mail, with one exception. Each time you change your NDS password, you must save the new information in the Secret Store so that you do not have to retype your password when you get your mail via Groupwise Web Access.

Changing your UMS password
If you have been given VM/CMS access, you will be prompted every 150 days to change that password. Your password must be at least six characters and must contain one number.
- Go to mail.maine.edu - click Change your UNET account password.
- Fill in the Userid (part to the left of "@" in your email address), Old Password and New Password fields.
- Click Change Password.
Changing your NDS password
We also require that you change your NDS password every 150 days for security purposes. You will receive a notification upon logging into your computer that your password is set to expire after six more logins. You will be asked if you wish to change your password at that time. The prudent user will make that password change before it actually expires, thus saving an embarrassing phone call to Tech Support. If you wish to change the password when prompted by Novell:
- Type in the old password in the Old Password field.
- Type in the new password twice.
- Click OK and you will be notified that the password change was successful.
If you elect to change your password prior to being notified that it is set to expire, such as when you have changed your UMS password and wish to keep it the same as your NDS password, follow these steps:
- After you have logged into your computer, hold down the control, alt and delete buttons at the same time and the Novell Security window comes up.
- Click Change Password.
- Type in your old password in the Old Password field.
- Type in the new password (perhaps your new UMS password) twice.
- Click OK and you will then be notified that the password change was successful.
Your NDS and GroupWise accounts are set up so that you do not have to retype your password to access your mail, with one exception. Each time you change your NDS password, you must save the new information in the Secret Store so that you do not have to retype your password when you get your mail via Groupwise Web Access.
Important to remember
- Changing your UMS password does NOT change your Novell/NDS/GroupWise password.
- Changing your Novell/NDS/GroupWise password does NOT change your UMS password.
