Guide to University of Maine System (UMS) Accounts and Info Systems
The University of Maine System has a number of information systems that students, faculty and staff rely on for performing various educational and work-related functions. Keeping track of which account to use, where to use it and how to get help can be challenging. After you have activated the account you need and know your id (or username) and password, you will be able to access the system(s) you need. There are three main accounts for accessing UMS information systems:
UMS Account
- This
is the standard University of Maine System account that provides University College computer logins, an email address, Blackboard
access, WebCT access, online information
specific to your role in the university (Maine Street UMS), and access to
the internet via UMS wireless networks. Registered off-campus students can also obtain a library card from Off Campus Library Services.
Account management
- Obtaining an account:
- UMS
account creation is triggered by employment, course registration or
acceptance as a student. You must activate the account before it is
usable.
- Activating your account:
- Visit the IT Services Account Activation page.
- Students will need their StudentID and account activation key. This may be provided to you by the campus after registering for a course.
- If you do not know your StudentID and account activation key, contact ITS Tech Support for help.
- Employees will need their EMPLID and account activation key.
- Maintaining your account:
- Visit the UMS Mail Server page for account activation, password changes, lost password resets and mail forwarding changes.

Systems that use the UMS Account:
- University College student computers
- ITS manages computers at all University College centers
except Houlton (managed by UMPI) and Penquis (managed by EMCC).
- Accessing the computers:
- Log in with UMS ID and password.
- If no UMS account, contact Center staff to determine eligibility to use the computers.

- Your UMS account provides you with an @maine.edu email account to use while affiliated with the UMS system.
- Accessing your mail via the web:

- Blackboard
- UMS online software tool which allows your instructor to teach all or part of your course on the Web.
- Accessing Blackboard:

- BB access is available within an hour of activating the UMS account

- Online
access to information, tools, and resources specific to one's role in
the UMS as a faculty member, staff member, student or applicant for
admission.

- UMS Wireless networks
- ITS
maintains wireless networks at many UMS locations that provide Internet access for University students, faculty, staff and
authorized guests. The computer must be configured to connect to ITS's
Tempest network.
- Accessing wireless networks:
- Connecting to a UMS wireless network for the first time:
- Open a browser and you should see the ITS Net Reg page.
- Log in with UMS ID and password.
- Reboot computer
- Re-open the browser to determine if you can browse the internet.

UMS Library Cards/Research Services
- Distance students and faculty can get research assistance from Off Campus Library Services (OCLS). OCLS can help you obtain a library card, manage your book renewals, and show you how to obtain journal, magazine, and newspaper articles.

DSIS Account
- DSIS
(Distributed Student Information System) is a UMS maintained Web site
that allows students to access academic, billing and financial aid
information 24 hours a day.
Accessing WebDSIS:
- Visit the WebDSIS page.
- First time logging in:
- Log in using student identification number and 6-digit date of birth.
- You are then prompted to change the PIN.

FirstClass Account
- FirstClass (FC) is software used to access UMaine Orono's communication system for email and/or course content.
Account management:
- Obtaining an account:
- A FirstClass account is created upon acceptance as a UMaine Orono student or upon registration in a class using FirstClass.
- Setting it up:
- You receive a letter with instructions and link for setting up the account via the web. NOTE: if you do not have the letter with instructions within two weeks of the start of class, you must contact the UMIT or UMaine Continuing & Distance Education help desk to get the account set up.
