Wifi Access for clients without a UMSID
If you don't have a UMSID you cannot self-register your wireless device on the UMS wifi network. However, in some situations non-UMS clients may be granted access to the UMS wifi network when such access is necessary to support UMS-related activities. This service is currently available to clients working from:
- University College distance education centers
-
University of Maine System Office – 16 Central St., Bangor, ME
Authorization
If you are working on UMS-related activities in one of these locations, contact the location staff for gaining access to the University's wifi network. If authorization is granted, the location staff will contact ITS to add your device to the wifi network.
Location Staff Instructions
When you need a non-UMS client added to the wifi network, in order to support UMS-related activities, contact Techsupport with the client's full name and the physical address of the wifi device. If needed, Techsupport will assist you in determining the device's physical address.
Note: It is very important that UMS staff refrain from registering others' devices using their own UMSID. Doing so opens the staff person to the possibility of identify theft, personal financial risks and exposes university systems to disclosure of protected student/personnel information.
Ascertaining a wireless device's physical address
You will need to provide your wireless device's "physical address" to the location staff. This is a unique identifier built in to your device. It is sometimes referred to as the "hardware" or "mac" address.
To ascertain your "physical address" in Windows XP
- Connect to the “tempest” wireless network using the normal
procedure for your computer
- Start Menu --> Control Panel
- Network Connections (If presented with "Pick a Task" then choose
the "Network Connections" Control Panel icon again)
- Double-click the "Wireless" connection icon. (The name of this icon will vary based on your computer's configuration. It typically includes some reference to "Wireless Internet" or "Wifi". Ignore any connections for "Bluetooth" or "Infrared" wireless)
- Click the "Support Tab"
- Click the "Details" button
- The "Physical Address" is displayed
