Center Computer Clusters



General

ITS manages computer clusters at all University College Centers except Houlton and Penquis. Most ITS-managed center contain a computer -equipped classroom and an informal-use computer cluster. Houlton Center computers are managed by UMPI, Penquis Center by EMCC.

Logging In

In ITS clusters, login with your UMS ID (your @maine.edu account).  No account?  Contact Center staff to determine eligibility to use the computers.

Cluster Features

Each cluster includes a B&W laser printer.  Each computer classroom has an instructor computer with a projector.  Contact Center staff for details about a specific computer classroom or cluster.

Security

Cluster computers are configured such that all changes made by a user are removed at the next reboot. Security features on cluster computers may disable some typical Windows management functions; e.g., Control Panels, Display Properties, Services, etc.  Users login to cluster computers using their UMS ID (@maine.edu account).  Cluster computers are configured with anti-virus software.

Cluster Computer Software

Cluster computers are configured with a standard set of software packages.  Special software requirements must be communicated to ITS at least 10 weeks in advance of the date they are needed; e.g., applications, drivers, web plug-ins, etc., required for a course or workshop.

Saving Your Work

Classroom and cluster computers are configured to remove all changes made by the last user when the computer is restarted. This includes DELETION of all documents, files, bookmarks, browsing history, etc.  This includes any files stored on the computer's K: drive.

If you need a file that you've created during a session, be sure to save it to removable media; e.g., floppy disk or USB flash drive BEFORE TURNING OFF THE COMPUTER.  Files lost because they were left on the computer cannot be recovered.
