Requesting Computer Resources
|
|
 |
|
If your course makes use of special software or other computer
resources (for example, plug-ins needed for web sites, software from
your textbook publisher, or special application software), please let
us know at least 10 weeks before the semester begins.
We will review the license agreement and conduct testing to determine
whether or not the software will run on the computers at Centers.
Possible licensing restrictions or technical conflicts with hardware or
other installed software make it impossible for us to ensure your
software will run at the Centers. Due to extensive testing and
installation timelines associated with eight geographically separated
Centers, the 10-week lead time is absolutely essential. Late
notification diminishes the likelihood of the software being available
when needed.
Because we do not have direct responsibility for computing support at
sites, we cannot test software on site computers. Please be prepared to
provide alternative assignments in the case that a student depends on
the computer resources at a site or at a center where the software
cannot be installed.
If the use of the software is so critical that there is no reasonable
alternative, we must inform students of this requirement in our Course
Guide and other publications. Please notify us 5 to 6 months in advance
in order that we can complete necessary technical and licensing checks
prior to publication deadlines. Students who cannot be accommodated
will not be able to take the course.
In General...
- We install and support common Windows-based software applications.
- We install and support software at University College
Centers. Computers at "Receive Sites" are often managed by the
local site. ITS does not coordinate the installation of software
at sites. Contact the "Receive Site" coordinator for information
about installing software at a site.
- We recommend that faculty provide very specific information in the
courseguide and syllabus to students regarding technology requirements
for a course. For example, if students must have access to a
computer, the course description in the course guide should note
this. If a texbook-accompanying cd-rom will be used, it is
worth noting.
Overview of Software Request/Installation Process.
- Faculty complete the "Computer Resource Request" form at least 10 weeks in advance of semester start date.
- Lack of information about our rights to use software often hold-up
the installation process. Please provide the software license
agreement, installation media and installation documentation.
- Faculty will be alerted when the software is ready for testing. If
the faculty person will not be available during the 10 week install
period, make sure we have all necessary information OR complete this
process before leaving campus
- After the software is installed, the faculty person is responsible
for testing the software and notifying ITS Computer Services of any
problems.
- Faculty are responsible for communicating software usage instructions to students.
