Computrace

Background:

Absolute Software produces Computrace, a Lojack-like software for computers.  Computrace monitors the location of a computer whenever it connects to the Internet.

This capability may be useful at UMS for:

  • locating missing/stolen machines
  • removing sensitive data from stolen PC's
  • inventory management

Additional capabilities:

  • A machine can be instructed to remotely destroy all data on the drive and
  • optionally disable the operating system.
  • Absolute Software will work with law enforcement to recover stolen PC's
  • Licensed machines report whenever they boot or on an alternative schedule
  • A user-accessible database records:
    • installed software
    • installed hardware
    • the history of machine locations

Limitations:

  • a PC which does not connect to the internet will not be discovered.
  • If the hard drive is replaced or wiped, tracking is defeated (except Del computerss built since 1/06, that are activated with Lojack, are still protected if the hard drive is removed or wiped).
