Computrace
Background:
Absolute Software produces Computrace, a Lojack-like software for computers. Computrace monitors the location of a computer whenever it connects to the Internet.
This capability may be useful at UMS for:
- locating missing/stolen machines
- removing sensitive data from stolen PC's
- inventory management
Additional capabilities:
- A machine can be instructed to remotely destroy all data on the drive and
- optionally disable the operating system.
- Absolute Software will work with law enforcement to recover stolen PC's
- Licensed machines report whenever they boot or on an alternative schedule
- A user-accessible database records:
- installed software
- installed hardware
- the history of machine locations
Limitations:
- a PC which does not connect to the internet will not be discovered.
- If the hard drive is replaced or wiped, tracking is defeated (except Del computerss built since 1/06, that are activated with Lojack, are still protected if the hard drive is removed or wiped).
